What should I know about email scams?

As with any email sustem, scam emails can be sent to Immaculata employees, faculty, and students. It is important to understand what these messages are, know what to look for, and be aware of the dangers. 

What is a Scam or Phishing Message?

These types of messages get sent to everyone at one time or another. The goal of a 'phishing' or 'scam' email is to:

  • collect sensitive information like birthdays, addresses, phone numbers, etc
  • capture your account information, such as user codes, pins, and passwords
  • extort money or gain access to your accounts, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, routing codes, etc
  • infect your PC with a virus or other malicious software without your knowledge

How Can I tell if a message is a Scam?

The most obvious scams can involve an emotional story about a lost child, a plea for money to help a starving family, a request for you to respond regarding some free items you won, or even a long message that asks you to allow someone to transfer money into your account because they are trying to leave their country. These can all be quite creative, but you will likely recognize most of the really obvious ones. 

The less obvious ones may be harder to spot. They often appear to be from valid email addresses, legitimate companies, or even people you know, so it can be hard to tell sometimes.

These emails can be extremely deceptive!


  • They usually contain a web link that you are told to click on
  • They can include a form designed to collect information
  • They might tell you to go and LOGIN someplace that is unfamiliar to you
  • They may ask you to reply and send information
  • They may provide a toll free phone number or other methods of sending information

What is the Risk?

There is a risk to your personal information, your computer, and even to our university computer network systems if you provide information or click on links contained in these emails.

What Should I do?

If you clicked a link or filled out the web forms, you should change your network password immediately. Contact the OTS Helpdesk via the Helpdesk Request Form for assistance with virus scanning.
