How do I set rules to restrict an activity as to when a student can access them?

You can add restrictions to almost all activities and resources so they can only be accessed during a certain period of time, or for specific students, or after another activity has been completed. If you restrict an activity they will not be able to access that activity at all and will not be able to see your feedback files.

You can also set an activity so it can be accessed at different times by different groups of students.

Adding a Restriction Based on Date

  1. Go to the assignment or activity in Moodle.
  2. In the administration block, select Edit settings.

  3. Scroll down to the Restrict access section. You may have to click on the Restrict access heading to open the options in that section.
  4. Then click Add restriction.

  5. In the Add restriction... window, select Date.

  6.  Input the date and time when you want students to get access to the activity or resource.

  7. To add a date and time when students should no longer have access to the activity or resource, click the Add restriction button.
  8. In the Add restriction... window, select Date.
  9. In the Date pulldown menu, change the from selection to until.
  10. Input the date and time when you want students to no longer have access to the activity or resource.

(In the example above, students will be able to access the activity or resource from 8:00AM on November 23rd until 11:00PM on November 30th.)

  11. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select either Save and display or Save and return to class.

Having different groups accessing an activity or resource on different dates.

You can have different restrictions for different groups using nested restrictions using the Restriction set option. You will first have to have groups set up in advance before creating this option.

  1. Go to the assignment or activity in Moodle.
  2. In the Administration block, select Edit Settings.

  3. Scroll down to the Restrict access section. You may have to click on the Restrict access heading to open the options in that section.
  4. Create the Restriction set for the first group.

    2. In the Add restriction... window, select Restriction set.
