How do I automatically place students into groups for my course online?


Auto-Create Groups

When establishing groups for your class, use the "auto-create" to quickly assign students into diferent groups.

Complete the follow steps: 

  1. Navigate to the Administration block under Course administration and click on Users to open more choices. Then click Groups.

  2. Select Auto-Create group.

  3. Determine settings for the Naming Scheme of the groups.
    Apply naming scheme
    • The "@" symbol will generate groups in letter order.
    • The "#" symbol will generate the groups numerically.

  4. Next select the criteria for organizing students into groups.
    • Assign the students into a fixed Number of Groups.
    • Or, you may create groups by specifying the number of Members in a Group.

    • Then enter the Group/ member count (numeric value).
      • If you selected Number of groups, this entry will be the amount of groups created.
      • If you selected Members per groups, this entry will be the people people put in each group.

  5. Review the Group Member settings for additional options to customize grouping process.
  6. Click Submit to save your changes.
