Extra points can be allocated with all activities in the gradebook by manually entering points over the maximum values. or adding an extra credit assignment.


 

Adding extra credit for a class

You can add a Manual grade item to your course that counts only for extra credit. Points earned in this grade item are added to the points for the student, and points not earned do not count against the students.

 

  1. Navigate to your course and go to the gradebook.

  2. In the Administration block, click Grades.

  3. Click the Setup tab.

  4. Scroll to the bottom and click the button Add grade item.

  5. Give it an Item name that will let you know what this is referring to.

  6. You may have to click Show more, to see all of the options.

  7. For Grade type, make sure it is set to Value.

  8. For Grade display type, set the value to Real.

  9. In the Parent category, select an appropriate category for the extra credit to be applied.

  10. Click the Save changes button at the bottom of the page.

  11. You will be returned to the Setup menu.

  12. Find the grade item you created and click the Edit link to open a menu and then select Edit settings.

     
  13. Return to the Parent category and select the Extra credit option.

     
  14.  When you check the extra credit checkbox, the grade item's maximum grade is not added to the category's maximum grade, resulting in the possibility of achieving the maximum grade (or grades over the maximum if enabled by the site administrator) in the category without having the maximum grade in all the grade items.

  15. Click Save changes to finalize this process.

Adding extra credit to an activity

You can use the Column grader to input the point values.

You can use the column grader to give points OVER the maximum value. For example, 103/100: just type in 103 and click Save. It will give points over the total! Keep in mind: this must be done in the gradebook, not inside an assignment.

  1. Navigate to your course and go to the gradebook.

  2. In the Administration block, click Grades.

  3. Click the View tab and the Joule Gradebook tab.

  4. Select the category you are going to grade.

     
  5. Click on the Column actions icon to open the pull-down menu and select Column Grader.

     
  6. Once in the Column Grader, you can enter grades for the student including extra credit points.

  7. Click the Save button to finalize your grade inputs.
