How do I create a book in Moodle?


Prepare:


Adding a Book:

  1. If your course is in topic view, in the section in where you want the page located, select the Add an activity or resource link.
    -or-
    If your course is in folder view, in the section in where you want the page located, select the Add resource link.

  2. Select Book from the Resources menu, then scroll down and click Add.

  3. Type in a Name for the page.
  4. The Description is optional. Students will not see this unless you select Display the description on the course page or Display page description.

     
  5. Select the Appearance section.
    • Choose Chapter numbering.
      • None - chapter and subchapter titles are not formatted at all, use if you want to define special numbering styles. For example letters: in chapter title type "A First Chapter", "A.1 Some Subchapter",...
      • Numbers - chapters and subchapters are numbered (1, 1.1, 1.2, 2, ...)
      • Bullets - subchapters are indented and displayed with bullets
      • Indented - subchapters are indented
    • Check if you want custom titles.
     
  6. Common Module Settings:
    • Choose whether the activity should be visible or not to participants.

    • Choose an ID for the activity, for the purposes of using the ID in gradebook calculations.

      a. Setting an ID number provides a way of identifying the activity for grade calculation purposes.
      b. If the activity is not included in any grade calculation then the ID number field can be left blank.

  7. Restrict Access:
    • Access from/to dates to determine when students can access the folder via an icon on the course homepage.
    • This setting determines any grade conditions which must be met in order to access the activity.
    • Multiple grade conditions may be set if desired.
    • If so, the activity will only allow access when ALL grade conditions are met.

  8. Save/Cancel Settings:
    • Save and return to course this view will take you back to the front page of your course where you can see the link to the assignment.

    • Save and display this view will show you what the assignment looks like to the participants. 

    • Cancel will stop the activity from being created and all settings you choose to be lost.

Adding a Chapter to a Book:

  1. Continue by selecting Save and Display to begin adding a chapter.
    • Provide a chapter title.
    • Check off subchapter if it applies.
    • Enter the content for the chapter.

  2. Edit chapter pages:

    • From the Table of contents menu on the left hand side of your screen, choose the Add chapter pages
